"The Old Istanbul" Tour

The tour begins with a visit to Rumeli fortress - once strategically important as it was used to control the waterway at the narrowest point of the strait. After the fall of Constantinople in 1453, the fortress lost its significance and was used as a storage facility and a prison for local and foreign diplomats. In 1953 the fortress was turned into a museum. After passing by the famous Galata tower you will visit Yerebatan underground cistern. Yerebatan Cistern, also called "Yerebatan Palace" was commissioned Byzantine Emperor Justinianus the 1st around 540. The area which was gained by the underground carving of a rocky surface and the cistern have become the most important water resource for Istanbul. The cistern is supported by more than 300 columns, most of which were taken from antique temples. At the far-end of the crypt lie two marble blocks with a relief of snake-headed Medusa. The cistern which was cleansed and repaired by the Municipality of Istanbul between 1985 and1988, is today one of the most exciting sights with its mystifying and exotic atmosphere.
